Mitji had lived with the Aboriginal tribe for as long as she could remember. With her white skin, thin nose and red hair, she does not look like the rest of the tribe but she has learnt their skills of survival in the arid desert. As she nears womanhood, her oddness has made her an outcast and she must leave her people. She goes on a walkabout, in search of the walypalya, the tribe with red hair and white skin like her own, who had come from the great waters. Perhaps they would receive her kindly and let her stay with them. On her wanderings she comes upon a white man, lying half - dead in the blazing heat, and nurses him back to health. Together they made their way to his home, and Mitji becomes Meg and has to learn to wear clothes, to sleep in a bed, to sit on a chair - and to speak English. Gradually, she came to understand that she was herself one of the walypalya, a subject of Mitjiquin, Elder of Elders of all the white tribes - Queen Victoria. Meg has barely started her journey towards her true origins. In the world of the walypalya, there are new dangers and Meg must confront the terrors of a long sea voyage before she can find happiness on the other side of the world. Only the knowledge that she has learnt from her Aboriginal tribe can guarantee her survival and that of her friends.

Golden Urchin Madeleine Brent 9781459650619 Books Reviews
Very good story. It was not what I usually read, but enjoyed it.
A member of the family bought it by permission.
Oh my God- this book is wonderful! This ranks right up there with my favorite Victoria Holt titles. I will not summarize the story- other reviewers have done this. The story is told in first person narrative, by our heroine Mitji/Meg. It is poignant, wonderful and romantic. The guilt Luke feels in his attraction to Meg, her bewilderment at his mood swings, their growing love for each other (*sigh*), just fantastic. No graphic sex, just a lovely story well told. How refreshing in todays era of paranormal romance. You will not regret purchasing this book, it epitomizes the meaning of romance.
I really enjoy this book. This is the third copy I've owned. I first read this book in Jr. High and the storyline has stuck with me for decades. I highly recommend it.
I'll have to admit that this book is not my usual genre. I usually read paranormal, sci/fi. Futuristic (Hot romance stuff). While flipping through suggestions I saw this and it sounded intriguing. I really couldn't stop reading, except when I HAD to sleep. Loved it. Now I'm giving it to my daughter to read. I laughed, I cried, I got quite frustrated at some of the characters at times. And the mysteries...don't get me started, I recommend this book wholeheartedly to anyone who likes to read, even girls as young as 13. Of course that's just my opinion. My daughter is 30. I hope this helps someone decide to read "Golden Urchin" because I don't think you'd regret it. Of course that's just my opinion too.
I had had this book for years, until my new puppy chewed it up. I was very unhappy until I found it here, and I ordered it right away. I like Madeleine Brent, and this is one of my favorites of hers. She did a good job of capturing what it must be like to be raised by aborigines, and then found by a white person and restored to civilization, having to learn from scratch how to speak and to behave. But it doesn't end there. Brent is so good at character definition and plot development, and really puts together a good mystery, leaving you wondering right up to the end exactly how it will all come together. She is also good at the wrap up, pulling in all the pieces and not cutting you off too soon, and this is no exception. Altogether a very good book.
The Golden Urchin is my favorite Madeleine Brent title. I've read all of her books multiple times but I think following Mitji's transformation from aboriginal child to European young lady is fascinating. All of Brent's books have a similar progression young woman is raised in an unusual, exotic location where she meets a man, escapes/ travels to England for a more conventional lifestyle, ends up using that unconventional background to solve some problem, and wins the man. The exotic locations and problems differ in each story and I find them very intriguing. I hope you will give Golden Urchin a chance!
